Crime Rates are Rising with the Thermometer this Summer

It looks like this summer could have the necessary ingredients for the perfect storm that will send crime rates soaring through the roof. First off, it looks like criminal activity is trending upward along with the Recession, as desperate people begin to take desperate measures. Though concrete statistics have yet to be determined, police chiefs around the country report a noticeable increase in reported crimes. Most are recommending home security systems as the most potent method available to citizens for protecting against this surge.

People tend to spend more time outside of their own homes, leading to more invasions. Extreme heat also leads to a general loss of self-control and restraint. Finally, don’t forget that kids are out of school, unsupervised, and looking to cause trouble.

Having a home security system really does help ease a little bit of my fears this summer. Please protect your family and loved ones and educate your self this summer. Get a reliable home alarm system you can count on to keep you and your family safe.

The Keys to Keys - I bet you don't think of it often because it is such a normal daily activity that we take for granted. But our house keys are very important to us as they help keep us safe. Here are some tips…or what I call my "Keys to keys":
1. If you lose them, change your locks immediately. You never know where those lost keys may end up.
2. Don't keep a spare key in your mailbox, under the doormat or other obvious hiding spot around the outside of the house. You would be better off by burying it in your garden (just remember where!) in a small airtight container, like a 35 mm film container.
3. Always lock up your home...even if you are only going to be away for a short period of time. Otherwise, intruders could simply walk right in.
4. If you move into a new home, change the locks. Past residents may still have a key or worse, lose the key...leaving your home vulnerable.
5. Don't give your house key to anyone that is not trustworthy. If you are having a house cleaner or other professional come to the home while are away, make sure you check into their background and/or company to make sure they are reputable. Call the local BBB.

Learning the hard way

My neighbor learned the hard way this past weekend. Someone broke into her garage and made off with her power tools. It happened overnight when she was out of town visiting her family. Unfortunately, she did not have a home alarm or motion detectors so the thief had it easy. She was devastated. Not only did she lose a bunch of expensive tools, but she also feels just terrible because someone was able to invade her privacy so easily. After she calmed down, I talked to her about my company, In Home Security, and we called on the spot to set up an installation. They will be here early this week to get everyting set up for her. Ladies - this is especially important when you live alone. Don't learn the hard way like my neighbor did...be proactive and protect yourself!

Summertime Safety - While you are away

Summertime should be fun for the whole family. Make it a safe summer by following some of my recommended summer safety tips. If you are going on vacation, take the proper precautions:
-Notify a neighbor or local trusted family friend to keep an eye on your house.
-They can set out your garbage cans so it doesn't appear that you are away.
-Ask them to gather your mail and newspapers so they don't pile up - a sure giveaway that no one is home.
-Make sure that all of your doors and windows are locked - Don't forget the basement and garage doors too!
- Don't leave valuable items visible from outside - This is a tempting invitation for a burglar to help himself to your valuables.
- If you leave a car in the driveway, make sure you remove the garage door opener. All an intruder has to do is busy open your car window and he immediately has access to your home via the garage.
- FINALLY, be sure to set your home security system!
Keep your home safe while you are away on vacation or holiday. Enjoy the summer!
